We've committed to making the Halifax Urban Trail as environmentally sustainable as possible. We think that runners are keen and ready to play their part in this respect.
🎽 Thoughtful T-shirt Policy
As we mention in the FAQs, we want to avoid giving out unwanted T-shirts which then lurk in drawers or, worse, end in landfill sites. We're asking you to decide when you register whether you want a commemorative technical T-shirt and to pay for it at that point. We're commissioning stylish T-shirts from a specialist company who make their clothing from recycled material (but you wouldn't know the material was recycled, honest!)
💧 Plastic-Free Hydration
Our drink stations on the route and at the finish will not be giving water in plastic bottles, but will be using paper cups.
🚗 Sustainable Transport
You can help too, by sharing transport to the race (or even better using public transport).
♻️ Waste Reduction
We're implementing several measures to minimise waste:
- Digital race information and results
- Reusable timing chips
- Minimal packaging for race materials
- Recycling stations at key points
🌱 Local Sourcing
Where possible, we're working with local suppliers and businesses to reduce transport emissions and support the local economy.
How You Can Help
🚌 Use Public Transport
Take the train or bus to Halifax and walk or take a short bus ride to Shibden Park
🚗 Share Your Journey
Coordinate with other runners to share cars - it's more fun and better for the environment
💧 Bring Your Own Bottle
While we'll have water stations, bringing a reusable bottle helps reduce waste
🎽 Think Before You Buy
Only order a race T-shirt if you'll genuinely wear it - help us avoid waste
Our Ongoing Commitment
This is just the beginning of our sustainability journey. We're committed to learning from this inaugural event and continuously improving our environmental impact. We'll be measuring our carbon footprint and looking for ways to reduce it year on year.
If you have suggestions for how we can make the Halifax Urban Trail even more sustainable, we'd love to hear from you at halifaxurbantrail@gmail.com.
